Wheels vs Tires: What Should You Upgrade First?

The Classic Dilemma

You've got the budget for one upgrade. Do you go wheels or tires first? It's one of the most debated questions in the truck community, and the answer might surprise you.

The Case for Tires First

Tires are where the rubber meets the road - literally. They affect:

  • Traction - Better grip on and off road
  • Ride quality - More sidewall = smoother ride
  • Appearance - Aggressive tread patterns look mean even on stock wheels
  • Safety - Better stopping distance, better handling in rain

If you're running worn-out factory all-seasons, upgrading to a quality all-terrain like the BFGoodrich KO2 or Toyo Open Country AT3 will transform how your truck drives and looks.

The Budget Move

You can often fit a size up (say, 275/70R17 from 265/70R17) on stock wheels with no rubbing. Instant improvement for a few hundred bucks.

The Case for Wheels First

Wheels change the entire character of your truck. A set of aftermarket wheels with the right offset can:

  • Widen your stance - Fills out the fender wells
  • Reduce weight - Quality aftermarket wheels are often lighter than factory
  • Enable bigger tires - The right offset and backspacing makes room for larger rubber
  • Look incredible - Let's be honest, this is the main reason

The Style Move

Method, Fuel, KMC, and Moto Metal all make wheels that will completely transform your truck's appearance even with stock tires.

Our Recommendation: Tires First, Then Wheels

Here's why:

1. Tires wear out. You're going to need new ones eventually anyway. Might as well upgrade. 2. Better tires on stock wheels look great. Aggressive tread on factory wheels is a clean, understated look. 3. When you do buy wheels, you buy tires too. If you buy wheels first, you'll either put your old tires on them (meh) or buy tires too (double the cost right now). 4. Tires improve performance. Wheels are mostly cosmetic.

The move: Buy great tires now, enjoy them for a year, then get wheels and a fresh set of rubber together. You get two upgrades instead of one.

The Exception

If your stock wheels are damaged, corroded, or a size that limits your tire options - go wheels first. Getting the right wheel size opens up way more tire choices.
