Best Lift Kits for the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra (2014-2024): The GM Half-Ton Guide
The Silverado and Sierra share a platform, but lift kit buyers need to understand what changed between the K2 (2014-2018) and T1 (2019+) generations before they order anything.
General Motors' half-ton trucks are among the most lifted vehicles in the country. The aftermarket for these trucks is deep, competitive, and well-developed. That's good news for buyers. The catch is that the 2019 redesign (the T1 platform) changed enough about the front suspension geometry that older kit designs don't transfer directly. If you have a 2019 or newer, make sure your kit says so.
This guide covers both generations, trim-specific notes, and what to realistically expect at each lift height.
Silverado / Sierra Lift Kit Quick Reference
| Lift Height | Tire Size | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leveling (1.5"-2.5") | Up to 33" | Stance + daily driver | Strut spacer bolt-on. Most popular first mod. |
| 2"-3.5" Lift | 33"-35" | Street + light trail | Verify T1 vs K2 fitment. Shocks matter at this height. |
| 4"-6" Lift | 35"-37" | Trail + overland | Aftermarket UCAs recommended. Check CV angle at 4"+. |
| 6"+ Lift | 37"+ | Dedicated off-road | Full suspension build. Not a bolt-on project. |
K2 Platform (2014-2018) vs T1 Platform (2019-2024)
K2 (2014-2018 Silverado 1500 / Sierra 1500)
The K2 generation is one of the most well-documented platforms in the lift kit aftermarket. Kits are mature, fitment data is abundant, and most reputable brands have deep catalogs for this generation. Leveling kits are a straightforward strut spacer install. Two to three-inch lifts are well-supported with quality shock options.
One K2-specific note: the 2014-2018 trucks with the Z71 Off-Road Package have different front spring rates and strut specs than non-Z71 trims. Many lift kit listings call this out specifically. Make sure your kit is listed for your trim, not just your year.
T1 (2019-2024 Silverado 1500 / Sierra 1500)
The T1 generation brought a new front suspension design, revised geometry, and, on certain trims, the Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) adaptive suspension. Lift kits for the T1 platform caught up with the market by 2021, but you should always confirm 2019+ specific fitment when ordering.
Magnetic Ride Control trims (LTZ Z71, High Country, AT4, Denali) require special consideration. Standard lift kits are not directly compatible with MRC-equipped trucks. You need either an MRC-compatible kit or a conversion kit that bypasses the adaptive system. This is a real fitment cliff. Don't assume compatibility without confirming.
Trim-Specific Flags
- WT / Custom / LT: Standard suspension. Most straightforward lift install on the platform.
- Z71 (both generations): Factory off-road springs and shocks. Confirm your kit accounts for Z71 spring rates.
- Trail Boss (T1): Factory 2" lift from the factory. Most Trail Boss owners add a leveling kit to even the stance or go to 3" total. Verify compatibility specifically for Trail Boss geometry.
- AT4 (GMC): Factory lifted, similar to Trail Boss. Same considerations apply.
- MRC-equipped trims: Do not install a standard lift kit. Requires MRC-compatible or bypass kit.
Tire Sizing on the Silverado / Sierra
GM's half-tons have generous front fender clearance on most trims, which makes tire fitment more forgiving than some competitors. Realistic sizing:
- 33s on a leveling kit: True bolt-on. No trimming needed on standard offsets across most trims.
- 35s on a 2.5"-3.5" lift: Fits reliably with correct offset. Minor liner trimming at full lock is common but not universal.
- 37s on a 5"-6" lift: Achievable with quality kit and correct UCA upgrade. Requires alignment cams and extended brake lines.
The Sierra Denali and Silverado High Country have wider factory running boards that can limit tire clearance on wider-offset wheels. Factor this in when selecting wheel offset for these trims.
The Silverado vs Sierra Question
The Silverado and Sierra share the same frame, engine lineup, and suspension architecture. Lift kit fitment is identical between the two for the same year and trim level. The cosmetic differences (hood, grille, interior) do not affect suspension compatibility. If a kit fits a 2021 Silverado LT Z71, it fits the equivalent 2021 Sierra SLE Z71.
